Ireland & Northern Ireland Day 6: Northern Ireland & A Bit of History

We bid farewell to the charming and beautiful country of Ireland and headed east into Derry, Northern Ireland. It was time for a bit of history learning and Derry was the perfect location for it.

Originally, we had planned a stop at either the Free Derry Museum or the Tower Museum, which boasted a cracking Derry Girls exhibit (yes, we've binged the show and it was tempting!). However, after some discussion, we felt the museums might be a bit too dark and difficult to visit with Adventure Girl. So, we had a walking tour all planned out from Free Derry into the walled city, with a stop at the Craft Market. Unfortunately, the Irish weather had really caught up to us and it was dreary, wet, and cold.

We did our best despite the conditions. We got to the Free Derry sign and several political murals. We walked across the Peace Bridge. The Craft Market lived up to its reviews online (we suggest visiting the nearby Craft Market in Donegal for much higher quality, local artisinal products). Then we found a restaurant inside the walled city and proceeded to learn about the Derry history from the very comprehensive Free Derry Museum website, while sheltered from the elements. It was a shame, really, because there is so much to be said for living the history by walking in the footsteps of those who have lived the atrocities. But, we did the best we could with the weather and a seven year-old in tow.

From there, we moved on to our next Air BnB, surrounded by farm fields and cows. It was our most spacious place yet and it is amazing how long three nights can feel in one spot where you can really spread out and relax.
